Using hydroponics for vegetable gardening is not so difficult and even if it may sound a little exotic, it’s a really simple process.

What is Hydroponics Gardening?

It is simply making grow vegetables without using any soil. Maybe you don’t believe that anything could be grown without soil, but this type of vegetable gardening is not only possible, it’s very fun and easy.

What You Need To Start

In order to start your vegetable gardening by hydroponics, you need a few simple supplies. Here is what you need:

  • You first need something for the plant to grow on,
  • something for the roots to drink from,
  • and something to feed your plants with.

When vegetables are grown by hydroponics, they simply grow out of a container of water, rather than a pot of soil.

Many people think that it is impossible, because they mistakenly believe that soil is what feeds plants. Of course,  soil contains most of the time  many nutrients, but you must know that plants mostly use it to provide their structure.

The nutrients found in soil have been placed there through compost or other amendments.

In order to grow vegetables without soil with success, you only need to provide your plants with light, water, and food. If done correctly, you should see a bigger crop than traditionally grown plants. Plants grown through hydroponics are able to concentrate their growth into their leaves and fruit rather than on their roots. Traditionally grown plants have to put a lot of effort into establishing a strong root system and this can affect plant yield.

This is the reason why you will be able to grow more plants using hydroponics system in the same amount of space you would use for a traditional garden.

You can purchase special hydroponic gardening containers from most hardware stores or garden centers.

If you have never tried hydroponic vegetable gardening, this is a highly recommended way to begin. You will be able to grow your own fruits and vegetable, even if you are living in an appartment.

Many containers are sold as a part of a kit that also includes the right mix of plant food to perfectly nourish your growing hydroponic garden. Once you have some experience in hydroponic gardening, it is very easy to build your own containers with used buckets, a drill, and plastic tubing.

Some great ideas for the first time hydroponic gardener include growing tomatoes, herbs or a salad garden. Most herbs and even a salad garden can be grown indoors, extending your garden season by several months.
